Fly Safe: Travel Tips for Senior Citizens
If you’re a senior citizen, chances are that you have big dreams. After all, you’ve been working hard your entire life. It’s normal to want to travel and to see the world during your retirement years. Before you take off on the trip of a lifetime, however, make sure that you take the time to plan a safe trip. If you’re going to fly to your destination, there are a few ways that you can make sure that you stay safe, healthy, and in charge during your journey.
While you won’t be able to bring water bottles through the security checkpoint, you’ll need to make a conscious effort to stay hydrated. When you’re traveling, following a normal eating schedule is nearly impossible, so it’s easy to become dehydrated. Dehydration can lead to illness and fatigue. Neither of these are things that you’ll want to deal with on your trip. Once you get through security, purchase a couple of water bottles to drink during your journey. Make sure that you’re sipping water even if you don’t feel thirsty in order to keep your body in the best possible shape.
Wear comfortable clothing
Even a short flight can be uncomfortable if you’re wearing the wrong type of clothing. Always wear a pair of pants that you feel at ease in when you’re planning to fly. Your shirt should also be form fitting, yet loose enough that you can move easily in. Should you be selected for a security pat-down, you’ll be much more comfortable if you aren’t wearing a dress or skirt.
Walk as much as possible
The major concern with flying is that you’ll be sitting still for long periods of time. This can lead to an increased risk of blood clots, especially in your legs. To combat this risk, get up and walk several times during the flight. Even if you just walk back to the restroom and back, it’s important to get your body moving and your blood pumping. If there is too much turbulence or you are physically unable to do a lot of walking, you can still move your legs from your seat. Hold up one leg and rotate it in a small circle. Repeat with the opposite leg.
Eat on a regular basis
Always eat at regular intervals when you travel. If you skip a meal or forget to eat, your blood sugar levels could drop. This can lead to dizziness, headaches, and fatigue. Additionally, low blood sugar levels could make you feel weak. If you’re going to be on the plane for a long time, make sure that you pack a few snacks that are high in protein, such as peanut butter crackers or beef jerky.
Keep your identification handy
Finally, always keep your identification handy. Never pack your ID card or passport in the center of your bag where it could be difficult to find. Instead, consider getting a safety travel wallet to wear under your shirt or keep your identification in your purse where you can readily access it. This will ensure that you’ll be able to quickly get to your ID card if you’re asked for it.
