Surprising Health Benefits of Chili Peppers
Those tiny red hot chili peppers bring more than the occasional fiery kick to your favorite dishes. The capsaicin in chili peppers is helping you either to ward off or ease the symptoms of certain diseases. You may have already heard of capsaicin being used as an ingredient for pain-relief ointment. The long list of spicy chili peppers’ health benefits, however, does not stop there. Here are three more surprising health benefits.
Alleviates Sinus Problems
A nasal spray laced with an ingredient obtained from Capsicum annum, a variety of hot chili peppers, can aid in easing the symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis. This type of sinus inflammation is caused by the weather, fumes, and other environmental factors. Funded by Dynova Laboratories, the results of the study were published in the journal, Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
Improves Heart Health
In a report delivered during the 243rd National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society, it has been discussed that capsaicinoids–the family of chemicals that impart heat to jalapeno, habanero, cayenne, and other chili pepper variants–promote heart health via two mechanisms. One, they lessen cholesterol accumulation in the body by enhancing its breakdown and excretion. And two, capsaicinoids impede the action of a gene for contracting the arteries, thus lowering blood pressure and ensuring that the blood vessels offer unrestricted blood flow to the heart and other organs.
Fights Buildup of Fat
The capsaicin in chili peppers can aid in fighting fat accumulation and promoting weight loss, according to a study published in the Journal of Proteome Research. The exact mechanism by which capsaicin brings about its anti-obesity effects is still not yet well understood. However, there is no denying its connection to fat tissue and calorie intake reduction.
Chili peppers are good for you. But this does not mean you start going about eating them in excess as they can lead to stomach ulcers. Always enjoy the spicy hot flavor in moderation.
